Swallows routs Leopards

Moroka Swallows went a goal down, but then destroyed Black Leopards 4-1 in Dobsonville thanks to goals by David Mathebula (two), Siyabonga Nomvete and Ashraf Hendricks..

Mathebula not only scored a double in this Absa Premiership clash, but also made Hendricks’ goal in a night where he looked as good as ever.

Swallows goalkeeper Greg Etafia was also at his best, even saving a Kingston Nkhatha penalty kick in the dying minutes.

Leopards opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Thabo Mongalo headed home a Mongezi Bobe corner kick at the far post.

But just nine minutes later The Birds levelled when Mathebula fired into the top right corner from inside the danger area following a cross by Lerato Chabangu.

Then in the 25th minute Nomvete fashioned an attempt following Oscar Machapa’s cross, but ‘Bhele’s’ shot went wide of the upright.

In the 35th minute Nomvete sent a header just over the bar before Greg Etafia saved two attempts within two minutes from Khetho Masuku and Joshua Obaje respectively.

At the start of the second half, Swallows coach Gordon Igesund replaced Machapa with goal poacher Mpho Maleka, an obvious indication that he wanted to win the match.

And it did not take long for Maleka to make an impact on the match. He was brought down inside the danger area by Lidoda Duvha goalkeeper Thabang Maluleka and Swallows were awarded a penalty.

Nomvete stepped up in the 53rd minute and buried his shot hard and low into the corner to make it 2-1 to Swallows.

Obaje came close to netting a second for Leopards when his attempt in the 68th minute from the left side of the danger area was well blocked by his fellow Nigerian countryman Etafia.

Then in the 71st minute Ashraf Hendricks made Swallows’ lead more secure when he headed home Mathebula’s free kick.

This, after a foul by Harry Nyirenda on the in-form Mathebula. But the man known as ‘DVD’ got up, dusted himself off and delivered the free kick right onto Hendricks’ head.

Masuku threatened in the 80th minute for Leopards, but his shot was tipped around the post by the steady Etafia in goal.

Then Mathebula further stamped his influence on the match with his second goal of the night. Receiving a pass from Bongane Twala, Mathebula placed his shot across goal into the far bottom corner.

And in the 90th minute Etafia crowned his night with a penalty save from Nkhatha.
