Nhlapho: We need to rediscover confidence

Jomo Cosmos attacking midfielder, Siyabonga Nhlapho said they need to rediscover their penchant for scoring goals as they approach the Nedbank Cup quarterfinals.

Cosmos will play SuperSport United on Sunday afternoon.

The lanky midfielder, who displayed a solid performance in a league match against Orlando Pirates earlier this week, said the match against SueprSport is crucial in Ezenkosi getting their confidence back. Cup competition is important, but that form they also desperately need for their survival in the league.

“Considering how they have been playing and their recent form in the league up until their last game against Wits, they have been struggling to score. I think we also stand a good chance of winning the match,” Nhlapho said.

“Unless if they were on song and converting their chances, then we would be worried. For now, there is nothing to worry about because this is a cup game and everybody will play their hearts out and a winner needs to be determined at the end of the day.”

“Our chances of progressing to the semis are as great as theirs, unlike a league game, we need goals in order to win,” Nhlapho added.

The Soweto born player believes that hardwork and perseverance can change a team’s fortunes and perhaps the Nedbank Cup title is their destiny.

Cosmos have staged remarkable comebacks in both the last 32’s and the last 16’s.

“It’s a sign, in life there is a sequence. It’s similar to a song and mathematically, opportunities and hardwork can lead to luck. In football, if we work hard and create opportunities, we will have luck on our side and things will most likely go our way.”

Despite their league form, Nhlapho said the cup competition is not a distraction in the quest for relegation survival, and playing more games was a good thing as it gave them continuity.

“We have earned our position in the Nedbank Cup. We can’t really compete for the league but we definitely have to go for this one. All teams want to win silverware.”
