Stars outshine Arrows in Durban

Free State Stars registered their first away win of the season in the Absa Premiership when they defeated Lamontville Golden Arrows 1-0 at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Wednesday night.

Abdul Basit Adam scored the only goal of the match early in the first half and it was enough to secure maximum points for the visitors as Abafana Bes’thende failed to convert their chances.

The home side threatened in the third minute when Philani Shange delivered a freekick into the box which found Vuyisile Ntombayithethi with space on the near post, but he took long to get his shot away, allowing Sadate Ouro-Akoriko to make the clearance.

The visitors opened the scoring with their first real chance of the match in the 10th minute when Enva Wiltwer delivered a cross from the right for Adam to nod home from the centre of the penalty area, 1-0.

Sibusiso Mthethwa had a golden chance to double the lead in the 24th minute when he was put through on the left side of the box; he managed to get his tame shot past Siya Mngoma, but Gift Sithole was on hand to clear the danger.

Sithole almost made the visitors pay at the other end a minute later when he connected with a freekick from Shange at the far post, but the defender sent his header just wide of the upright.

The home side pressed on for the equaliser and in the 51st minute Bongi Ntuli collected the ball on the turn on the left side of the box before firing towards goal, but Daniel Agyei dived to his left to parry the ball to safety.

Eleven minutes later Abafana Bes’thende threatened from a corner kick which saw Ntombayithethi’s cross-cum-shot striking the upright, while Mzivukile Tom’s follow-up shot was blocked by a defender.

Then in the 66th minute Ntuli did well to hold the ball up on the edge of the penalty area before teeing up for Jabulani Nene to take a shot, but his left-footed drive flew just over the crossbar.

After some persistent pressing from the home side, Ntuli had a chance to steal a point in the 87th minute when he was given space outside the box, but his low shot went wide of the upright.

The result moves Ea Lla Koto to sixth place with eight points from five matches, while Arrows drop to 12th place with four points from five matches.
