Ajax eyeing Ameobi brother

Tomi Ameobi, the younger brother of Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi and older brother of Sammy Ameobi, is training with Ajax Cape Town.

The 25-year-old began his career with Leeds United, but left the club before making his first team debut. He went on to play for a host of clubs in the lower divisions in England, although it was in Iceland and later Finland where he recorded the best goals to games statistics of his career.

There is no clear indication at present as to whether the Urban Warriors will be signing the six-foot Newcastle–born marksman, but coach Muhsin Ertugral is certainly pleased with what he has seen of the player, who has been at Ikamva since Tuesday.

The Ajax coach says Ameobi would certainly add something extra to the Urban Warriors attack:

“He is not only a deep striker but he also an active player who can keep the ball. He is good in the air and with the ball at his feet. Tomi is technically gifted and I like what I saw. We looking for a striker and we do have a foreign spot still available.”

The players’ older brother, Shola, has played nearly 300 games for Newcastle United, and has been capped at junior international level by England, and at senior international level by Nigeria.

The youngest of the three brothers, the 21-year-old Sammy, is on the books of Newcastle, but is currently on loan at Middlesbrough. He has been capped by Nigeria at under-20 level, and by England at under-21 level.

Ajax’s first choice strikers are currently Eleazar Rodgers (who is on loan from Mamelodi Sundowns), as well as Nathan Paulse and the young Tahreeq Morris.
