Downs move up to second place

Mamelodi Sundowns beat Golden Arrows 2-0 in an Absa Premiership match at Loftus Stadium on Wednesday night to go second on the log, while the side from Durban lay rooted to the bottom of the table.

It was a comprehensive performance from Sundowns who never looked in doubt of winning the match as goals in each half from Khama Billiat and Anthony Laffor secured the three points.

The result sees Sundowns up to second on the league table with 28 points, 11 adrift of league leaders Kaizer Chiefs and one point above third placed AmaZulu.

For Arrows, the defeat was their 12th of the season and sees them firmly rooted to the bottom of the log on ten points, three adrift of second from bottom Free State Stars.

‘Downs started the match positively and soon took the lead with Billiat superbly heading home a right wing cross from Bryce Moon in the tenth minute.

Seven minutes later and Billiat was at it again as he tried his luck from long range, but saw his effort sail narrowly wide of the target.

Arrows only real chance of the half came in the 35th minute when Rudolph Bester got on the end of a Deon Hotto cross, but his header went agonisingly wide of the post.

Sundowns, though, had the last say of the half when Elias Pelembe’s corer-kick was met by Cuthbert Malajila, but his header skimmed the wrong side of the post.

The second half saw the Brazilians continue to dominate the match and they soon doubled their lead through second half substitute Anthony Laffor in the 52nd minute.

After only being on the field for a minute Laffor was put through on goal by Pelembe and he made no mistake with a clinical finish, 2-0.

Any chance of an Arrows fight back was cut slim in the 63rd minute when Manti Moholo was sent for an early shower after receiving his second yellow card.

Sundowns took their foot off the pedal after that and held on for a comfortable win.
