Ajax hold on to defeat Wits

A fifth minute goal by Carl Lark was enough to see Ajax Cape Town overcome a ten-man Bidvest Wits side in an Absa Premiership match at Cape Town Stadium on Friday evening.

The Urban Warriors were slightly lucky to walk away with their first victory in 2014 after they were pressed back for the majority of the game despite having a one man advantage.

A chance to hand Ajax an early lead was wasted when Carl Lark burst inside the box and got the better of his marker, but his shot was skewed wide of goal.

But the Santos-owned striker managed to break the deadlock four minutes later when he struck from close range with some venom to make it 1-0.

Matthew Pattison tested Anssi Jaakkola with a powerful long-range effort in the tenth minute but the Finish ‘keeper was equal to the task.

A good opportunity fell to Matthew Booth at the back post from a corner midway through the half. The ball was floated into the box and in over Papy Faty, but it fell straight at the towering defender who could only see his header bounce off the ground and turn wide of goal.

It was nearly 1-1 when Onismor Bhasera’s saw his attempt loop towards goal. But it was Jaakkola who made a last ditch save with his fingertips to keep the home side’s lead in tact after 34 minutes of play.

Wits were having the lion’s share of the possession but fell victim to some heated moments which saw Dankwae Kofi sent off on the brink of halftime. The midfielder was found guilty of a nasty elbow on Abbubaker Mobara which saw him dismissed instantly by referee Robert Smith.

Asive Langwe was brought on after the break in place of Pattison, before Jaakkola was again at full stretch to beat away another Wits corner at the near post.

Bhasera came agonisingly close to putting his side on level terms with a powerful snap-shot from outside the box which saw the Finnish goalkeeer push it wide.

Keagan Dolly should have made it 2-0 minutes later when he burst into the box before disappointingly firing his effort just inches over the bar.

The youngster looked to atone for his earlier miss when he struck a daisy-cutter in the 67th minute which went well wide of the far post.

Toriq Losper looked to make an immediate impact after coming on with 15 minutes remaining. The midfielder struck a powerful angled drive on the corner of the box which flew narrowly over the goal.

Wits thought they had scored a goal when a corner kick was cleared off the line by Aiden Jenniker in the final moments of the game, but the ball had not crossed the line.

Ajax did enough to sustain Wits’ pressure as they claimed the three points to move on the brink of a top eighth place.
