Brazilians down Ajax at Loftus

Three penalties were scored and two were missed as Mamelodi Sundowns claimed a dramatic 3-2 Absa Premiership win over Ajax Cape Town at Loftus Stadium on Saturday evening.

Teko Modise and Katlego Mashego missed their respective spot-kicks for the victors, while Nathan Paulse converted his for the Urban Warriors.

The Brazilians came out bossing the possession in the opening stages of the game, and Anssi Jaakkola was definitely the busier of the two goalkeepers when he made a great save in the 14th minute.

Bryce Moon supplied a ball into the box, where Katlego Mashego got the better of Dominic Isaacs and slightly directed the ball towards goal where the Finnish stopper palmed it off the line.

Sundowns was then handed a penalty in the 18th minute when Thulani Hlatshwayo pulled down Teko Modise in the box. The midfielder stood up to take the spot-kick from six-yards, but was brilliantly denied by Jaakola, keeping the scores on par.

Thabo Nthethe did hand the Brazilians their deadlock-breaking goal just before the half hour.

The former Bloemfontein Celtic man rose above everyone in the box and nodded home a Modise free-kick.

A second penalty was handed to the hosts four minutes later after Granwald Scott was guilty of an illegal challenge. This time it was Katlego Mashego who took to the spot and he converted from six-yards to make it 2-0.

Pitso Mosimane’s side were doing all the attacking and they were then denied by the upright when Bongani Zungu’s snap-shot hit the woodwork, but the half ended with a penalty in favour of Ajax.

Nathan Paulse pulled Ajax a goal back by the time of the interval when he converted in calm fashion to make it 2-1.

The second half commenced in the same fashion as the first half ended, with another penalty.

Mashego squandered the chance of making it 3-1 when he rattled the crossbar with a powerful strike in the 55th minute.

Khama Billiat nearly got on the scoresheet against his former team when he lobbed in a shot which went narrowly wide of the post midway through the second-half.

But Sundowns soon found the back of the net for the third time in the evening when Anthony Laffor came off the bench to beat Jaakkola with a strike at the near post.

Hlatshwayo’s dramatic overhead kick was denied by the upright in the final minutes, before Ajax were handed their second penalty of the evening of which Davids converted to make it 3-2.
