Aces pile more misery on Arrows

Mpumalanga Black Aces collected maximum points away from home when they defeated Lamontville Golden Arrows 2-1 in an Absa Premiership encounter at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Wednesday night.

Rudolf Bester cancelled Method Mwanjali’s first-half opener but Aces pushed on for the win with Themba Zwane netting the winner deep into the second half.

Aces threatened as early as the fifth minute when Abia Nale squared the ball towards Thabo Qalinge, but his shot was saved by Arthur Bartman.

The Arrows goalkeeper was called into action again seven minutes later, but he was positioned well again to stop an effort from Nale.

AmaZayoni opened the scoring from a freekick in the 24th minute as Mwanjali saw his effort hitting the back of the net following a deflection.

Arrows had an opportunity at the other end five minutes later with Siyanda Zwane delivering a cross from the right, but Vuyisile Ntombayithethi was unable to keep his header down.

Qalinge came close to doubling the visitors’ lead on the half hour mark when he created some space to shoot outside the box, but his effort curled just wide of the target.

Arrows were restricted to long range shots and it was the visitors who came close again in the 38th minute when Tendai Ndoro unleashed a shot which flew just wide of the post.

Abafana Bes’thende almost found the equaliser in the 56th minute as new signing Christopher Katongo connected with a cross from Deon Hotto, only to see his header kept out by Jackson Mabokgwane.

Their persistence eventually paid off six minutes later when Bester, who had come on as a substitute, nodded home to level the scores.

Arrows’ relief didn’t last long though as Zwane restored the lead for the visitors in the 74th minute, tapping the ball in from close range.

Substitute Clifford Ngobeni tried to score against his former side ten minutes later, but his effort went wide of goal as AmaZayoni held on for the 2-1 win.
