Downs cruise to Nedbank Cup quarters

Mamelodi Sundowns booked their place in the quarterfinals of the Nedbank Cup with a 4-1 come from behind victory over Golden Arrows at the King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday evening.

Philani Shange opened the scoring for the hosts but the Brazilians fought back and ended comfortable winners in the end thanks to goals from Dove Wome, Lebohang Mokoena, Anthony Laffor and Percy Tau.

Shaun Bartlett made three changes to his side that lost to Moroka Swallows last time out. The former Bafana Bafana striker included Nkosingiphile Gumede, Philani Shange and Manti Moholo in the starting XI will Rudolf Bester and Arthur Bartman dropped to the bench.

Meanwhile, Alje Schut and Teko Modise returned to the starting team for Pitso Mosimane’s side.

Sundowns dominated the opening exchanges but it was the hosts who took an early lead through Philani Shange in the 13th minute.

The midfielder produced a thunderous finish following great work by Siyanda Zwane down the right flank, Zwane’s cut-back found an unmarked Shange inside the area who made no mistake, hammering the ball past Wayne Sandilands.

The goal kicked ‘Downs into life but the Chloorkop based club, despite all their enterprising play, were finding it difficult to get in behind a disciplined Arrows backline.

Christopher Katongo missed a glorious chance to double the hosts’ lead before Dove Wome levelled matters in the 39th minute. Katongo made a darting run into area but the Zambian failed to direct his attempt past the Sandilands.

At the other end Wome made no mistake from an acute angle as he continued his scoring run against Abafana Best’hende. The Togolese midfielder ran onto a superb through ball by Laffor before directing the ball past Gumede to send the teams into the break deadlocked.

Surprise Moriri went close 10 minutes into the second stanza.

The old-guard of Alje Schut, Teko Modise and Moriri combined well with the former Bafana midfielder’s effort smashing off the post.

Mokoena marked his recent return from a long injury lay-off with a thunderous strike in the 58th minute to give the visitors the lead.

Four minutes later and it was 3-1.

Laffor left two defenders in his wake before finishing off superbly with the outside of his boot.

Percy Tau scored his first goal in a Mamelodi Sundowns shirt in the 90th minute to mark an impressive win.

Teko Modise hit the inside of the post before recovering the rebound and setting up Tau who produced an exquisite finish to complete the rout.
