Ngcobo strike buries Arrows

Lamontville Golden Arrows suffered a fifth straight defeat in the Absa Premiership as they went down 1-0 to Bidvest Wits at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday night.

Sithembiso Ngcobo fired the Clever Boys ahead early in the first half but Abafana Bes’thende were unable to force a positive result despite creating numerous opportunities.

The hosts threatened to open the scoring in the 7th minute when Christopher Katongo evaded his marker at the far post to meet a cross from Siyanda Zwane, but his header was kept out by Moeneeb Josephs.

However, it was the visitors who took the lead six minute later when Ngcobo ran onto a pass from Asive Langwe on the left side of the box before rifling the ball past Arthur Bartman and towards the roof of the net.

Arrows continued to throw numbers forward and came close to levelling matters in the 17th minute when Jabulani Nene unleashed a powerful strike from long range which Josephs was forced to parry to safety.

The Wits goalkeeper was called into action again in the 25th minute, diving to his left to block a dipping freekick from Philani Shange. The rebound fell for Rudolf Bester but he rushed his shot wide of the target.

Bester had another opportunity three minutes before halftime when he was set up by Shange just outside the box, but his low strike was turned around the post by Josephs.

Abafana Bes’thende dominate possession early in the second half but failed to pose an real threat in front of goal until Katongo headed straight at Josephs in the 62nd minute.

Gavin hunt’s side almost doubled their lead eight minutes later as substitute Erwin Isaacs played a long pass towards Ngcobo on the right side of the box, but his solid strike was pushed onto the crossbar by Bartman.

Substitute William Thwala also tried an effort from outside the box in the 86th minute but his shot lacked power and Josephs was able to hold on to the ball comfortably.

Four minute later Isaacs used good skill to turn his marker on the edge of the box before firing just wide of the upright as Wits held on for the 1-0 win.
