Wits tighten grip on third place

Bidvest Wits tightened their grip on third place with their 1-0 Absa Premiership win over Platinum Stars at the Bidvest Wits Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Asive Langwe came off the bench to net the decisive goal eight minutes from time as the University outfit stretched their run to three consecutive wins.

Six points separated the two teams heading into the encounter and for Stars the fixture posed as an opportunity to cut the deficit by half.

Allan Freese’s men, however, were in need of bouncing back from two back-to-back defeats, while the Clever Boys were eyeing a hat-trick of league wins.

An early chance fell to the home side and it was Jabulani Shongwe who took it on the left foot, but he fired it wide of Siyabonga Mpontshane’s post.

Sthembiso Ngcobo, who was controversially left out of the Bafana Bafana squad for next month’s friendly, was signaled for offside after a quarter of an hour, before Siboniso Gumede saw his cross go out of play.

Wits were doing the majority of the attacking by the midway point in the opening 45, and it saw Siyabonga Nhlapo deliver a dangerous ball into the box, however, it flew narrowly over the head of Ngcobo.

Henrico Botes supplied a cross into the box eight minutes before the interval, only to see Robert Ng’ambi head a potential assist wide of Dennis Onyango’s poles.

The Clever Boys concluded the half with a chance of their own when ‘Sthem’ turned on the ball and fired a shot which sailed just millimetres wide of the target.

Calvin Kadi was denied of the deadlock-breaking goal straight after the restart when his stinging header clipped the crossbar to keep the scoreline level.

Shongwe then attempted a shot at goal just before the hour mark, which sailed over the angular of the goal frame, while Gavin Hunt threw on both Erwin Isaacs and Asive Langwe.

Platinum Stars eventually created a chance of their own with a quarter of an hour remaining, but it was Robert Ng’ambi who failed to connect to a cross at the back post despite throwing his whole body in the direction.

Wits did eventually steal the victory with eight minutes to spare when Langwe tapped in a ball at the back post from a Faty cross, 1-0.
