Wits to clever for the Dube Birds

Bidvest Wits increased their unbeaten run to seven matches when they edged out Moroka Swallows 2-1 in their Absa Premiership encounter on Wednesday evening at the Bidvest Stadium.

Lefa Tsutsulupa thought he had cancelled out Getaneh Kadebe’s goal, only to see Sibusiso Vilakazi score the winner in the final minute of stoppage time.

The home side welcomed the Dube Birds on the back of a six match unbeaten run, while, in contrast, the visitors had procured just one win in five encounters.

Wits came out with their guns blazing at the first whistle. Sthembiso Ngcobo got the better of Roger Da Costa, ran towards the box and floated in a cross that Jabu Shongwe turned straight onto the crossbar.

Calvin Kadi came close to turning the ball into the back of the net when the ball fell to him near the penalty spot on nine minutes, but Greg Etafia charged him down inside the box to push it out for a corner.

The Clever Boys were certainly dominating the early stages of the game and they saw another chance fired at goal go to waste when Papy Faty sent his effort flying over the bar eight minutes later.

Just before the half hour Ngcobo drew a great save from Etafia. The towering striker cut in from the flank and fired a powerful effort which forced the keeper into making a two-handed save at the near post.

Towards the conclusion of the half Gavin Hunt’s side created two opportunities through Shongwe and Sibusiso Vilakazi, but both failed to find the back the net.

The home side started off in the same fashion as they ended the first, by attacking, and this time it was Ngcobo who threatened with a header straight down the middle and into the arms of Etafia.

Kadi then drilled his shot just wide of the post in the 54th minute, while Zeca Marques threw Lerato Chabangu and Luvhengo Mungomeni onto the park.

Then, in the 68th minute, Moeneeb Josephs pulled off a great save to deny Moroka Swallows off a set-play, pushing out Chabangu’s set-piece for a corner kick.

Swallows started to apply more pressure as the game drew on and it saw Rudi Isaacs sting the side netting of Josephs’ goal midway through the second-half.

Wits broke the deadlock in the 83rd minute when Getaneh Kadebe, who came on as a substituted, turned the ball into the back of an empty from Vilakazi’s cross.

Kadebe had the ball in the back of the net again, but it was ruled out for offside, and few could have predicted what was to unfold in the final minutes of the match.

Swallows welcomed a late equalizer from Lefa Tsutsulupa, who drilled home on the half-volley in stoppage time, but Wits snatched the victory in 93rd minute through Vilakazi. The skipper drove home a low ball to wrap up a crucial three points.
