Chabangu steals the points for Birds

A late goal by Lerato Chabangu against the run of play gave Moroka Swallows a 2-1 Absa Premiership win over Orlando Pirates who had controlled the possession and missed several chances in the game.

Pirates will be disappointed having seen the likes of Mpho Makola and Kermit Erasmus miss very good scoring chances from close range, only for Swallows to net the winning goal against the run of play and during a second half where they sat back and defended.

Swallows opened the scoring early on when debutant Lantshele Phalane volleyed in a shot from distance, only for the ball to take a wicked deflection and leave Senzo Meyiwa stranded.

In the 19th minute Pirates almost pulled themselves level when Mpho Makola let one rip from range and Greg Etafia did well to punch away the swerving ball.

In the 30th minute Bucs had their best chance to draw level but somehow Kermit Erasmus fluffed the chance. A wonderful passing move by Pirates that cut open the Swallows defence with Daine Klate instrumental, but Erasmus, with time to pick his spot, somehow put the ball wide of the post.

But just three minutes later and Erasmus won his side a penalty when Rudi Isaacs made a clumsy foul on Erasmus when he should have stayed on his feet and not pulled the Bucs striker to the floor.

Oupa Manyisa slotted the penalty past a diving Greg Etafia who went the right way.

In the 55th minute Pirates missed another sitter. This time it was Mpho Makola. The move started with a great run by Erasmus down the left and he did well to hold the ball for a moment and cross to Makola hard and low, but somehow he blasted his effort over the bar from close range.

Klate went close in the 67th minute when his effort rattled the crossbar as Pirates pushed hard for a winning goal after much of the ball possession in the second half.

Greg Etafia again makes a strong save to deny Pirates in the 76th. It was Erasmus through on goal this time but the Nigerian goalkeeper blocked him brilliantly.

Swallows substitute Chabangu then gave Meyiwa his first bit of work of the second half and it was to fetch the ball out of his net. Chabangu did brilliantly to score on the counter attack after getting the better of three defenders to steal a winning goal.
