Platinum Stars shine brightest

A brace from Ndumiso Mabena handed Platinum Stars their first win of the 2014/15 Absa Premiership season after beating Free State Stars 2-1 at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Wednesday night.

It was a superb start to the game by Free State Stars who took the lead after only five minutes thanks to a goal from Angelo Kerspuy.

The home side, though, were not going to sit back and began mounting their comeback as they controlled the possession stakes and dictated the flow of play.

Platinum Stars made their pressure pay off just before the half hour mark when Ndumiso Mabena equalised, scoring his second goal of the season for Dikwena.

Neither side could breach the others’ defence again before the break as the half ended 1-1.

The home side came out firing in the second 45 and Mabena managed to find the back of the net for the second time ten minutes after the restart after heading home a corner-kick, 2-1.

That was his third goal of the season and it proved to be the winner as Free State could not find the equaliser.

The win was Platinum Stars first of the season and sees them up to ninth place on the table with three points after two games.

The loss for Free State was their second of the 2014/15 league campaign and sees them rooted to the bottom of the table.
