Sundowns, Wits share spoils

Bidvest Wits will be the happier of the two as the Clever Boys walked away with a goalless Absa Premiership draw against Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Versfeld.

Third in the standings, Wits held on to their top three spot thanks to the draw, which was a tight affair in Pretoria.

Sundowns, who headed into the clash on the back of four straight wins, failed to breach the Wits defence for a goal which would have taken them into the top two for the first time this season.

Wits' Moeneeb Josephs was kept the busier of the two goalkeepers in the opening half, Sundowns paying regular visits into the opposing half, which caused plenty of problems at the back.

Teko Modise and Ejike Uzoenyi were bossing the midfield and controlled the tempo in the opening 45, while Wits relied on a patient build-up, waiting to hit the hosts on the break.

Elias Pelembe, who scored the decisive goal for Downs against Tuks a fortnight ago, looked lively and was once again in strong form on the flanks.

An ultimately disappointing first 45 made way for the second, which took some time to really get going.

Buhle Mkhwanazi had the first chance of the second half with his headed effort, which grazed the top of the crossbar after Sameehg Doutie had whipped in a fine free-kick from out wide.

Late chances for Khama Billiat and Pelembe could have stolen the lead for Sundowns, but for Josephs, who was a man on fire between the posts.

Josephs made two fantastic saves in less than a minute to deny the pair, both forcing Josephs to parry away powerful shots at goal.
