Chippa fight back to hold Sundowns

A strong second half performance from Chippa United saw them come from a goal behind to draw 1-1 with Mamelodi Sundowns in an Absa Premiership match at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Wednesday night.

The draw is Sundowns third of the season and sees them stuck in fourth place on the log with 15 points from their nine games, a staggering ten points adrift of current league leaders Kaizer Chiefs.

Chippa, on the other hand, despite many expecting them to struggle this season are up to eighth on the league table with 14 points, only three points adrift of second placed Ajax Cape Town.

Sundowns certainly started the better team and were on the attack from the word go, but as we have become accustomed their passing in the final third, accompanied with poor finishing, saw them struggle to create any real danger in front of goal.

Nonetheless, they did persist and finally found the break through on the half hour mark when a mistake at the back allowed Khama Billiat to steal the ball and unselfishly square for Cuthbert Malajila who turned the ball home into an empty net from ten-yards out, 1-0.

Sundown dominated the rest of the half, but could not find another goal before the break.

The second half saw Chippa playing a lot better football, but still chances on goal for wither side were few and far between.

Nonetheless, Chippa were not prepared to go down in front of their home fans without a fight and continued to push forward.

The home side made their pressure tell on the hour mark when Thamsanqa Sangweni found the equaliser with a clinical finish from just inside the box, 1-1.

Sundowns tried to find a winner after being shocked level, but the closest they came was a Mario Booysen header in the 80th minute that was well-saved by the keeper.

Despite earning a share of the spoils, the night did end on a rather sour note for Chippa who were reduced to ten men in the 87th minute following the second yellow card to Thamsanqa Sangweni.
