Chippa down Bidvest Wits

A last minute goal by Mhlengi Cele fired Chippa United to a 2-1 win over Bidvest Wits at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Wednesday night.

A penalty apiece, from David Zulu and then Henrico Botes saw the scores locked at 1-1 at halftime, with Cele popping up in the 89th minute to secure all three points for the Eastern Cape side.

After a relatively incident-free start to the game, Chippa were to take the lead from one of their first attacks when Zulu beat Moeneeb Josephs from the penalty spot after Thulani Hlatshwayo had been ruled to have fouled George Akpabio.

Clever Boys midfielder Jabulani Shongwe tried to get his team back into the game when he went for goal from outside the box, but Chippa keeper Mbongeni Mzimela was up the task with his 18th minute save.

Bidvest Wits continued to pepper the hosts’ box with scoring chances as they upped their efforts in search of an equalizer. But Toriq Losper went wide with a shot and later a header, before the increasingly busy Mzimela made an outstanding fingertip save to deny Botes, while the industrious Shongwe was unable to find his target with a couple of free kicks.

The Students were finally given the opportunity to restore parity when Chilli Boys defender Gert Barends fouled Losper in the box, with veteran striker Botes keeping his cool from the spot to make it 1-1 after 40 minutes.

There was little goalmouth action on the other side of the restart as the game became a scrappy affair with a high foul count by both teams. A Josephs save from Akpabio and then William Twala were an exception to the rule as neither team found it easy to create chances on goal in the second half.

But there was to be a late twist in the tail as former Thanda Royal Zulu goal poacher Mhlengi Cele got on the end of an Andile Mbenyane cross to make sure the Chilli Boys claimed maximum points.
