Advantage Sundowns in Tshwane derby

Goals from Khama Billiat, Themba Zwane and Teko Modise helped Mamelodi Sundowns to fifth place on the Absa Premiership standings following a 3-1 come from behind victory over a 10-man SuperSport United outfit at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville on Wednesday.

Dove Wome got the visitors off to the perfect start, but the Brazilians fought back to claim a well-deserved win over their Tshwane rivals who had Thuso Phala sent off short of the hour mark.

With Tebogo Langerman suspended and Mzikayise Mashaba injured Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Pitso Mosimane handed Punch Masenamela a first league start for just under a year while Alje Schut took his place at the heart of defence having successfully recovered from a quad strain.

SuperSport United head coach Gordon Igesund meanwhile made a single change to the side that started the Telkom Knockout final against Platinum Stars at the weekend with Lerato Manzine drafted into the starting eleven in favour of Enocent Mkhabela fell to the bench.

Wome opened the scoring with 17 minutes on the clock. The Togo international who is on-loan from the Brazilians, beat the offside trap before rounding Kennedy Mweene and passing the ball into an open net.

The goal brought the game to life with Ronwen Williams forced into a superb close range save to deny Cuthbert Malajila seven minutes later.

Billiat pulled ‘Downs level just after the half-hour mark following a sustained passage of pressure. Malajila’s flick on from a Zwane cross fell favourable for the Zimbabwean attacker who fired home his first goal of the season.

The Brazilians continued to push forward and took the lead on the cusp of halftime. Teko Modise picked out Zwane who’s first attempt was expertly kept out by Williams, but the Matsatsantsa gloves man could do nothing to deny him slotting home the rebound.

‘Downs should’ve been 3-1 up three minutes into the second stanza, but somehow Modise and then Malajila failed to hit the target with the goal at their mercy.

SuperSport were dealt a major blow in the 59th minute as Thuso Phala received his marching orders. The winger was sent for an early shower after he seemed to elbow Billiat.

Modise wrapped things up in the 74th minute. Ramahlwe Mphahlele set-up the ‘Downs midfielder who’s beat Williams via a deflection.

The win moves Sundowns up to fifth place on the league standings while SuperSport drop to 11th.
