Downs secure second spot in derby

A brace from Mzikayise Mashaba secured a 2-1 win for Mamelodi Sundowns over SuperSport United in the Tshwane derby at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville on Wednesday evening.

The win for the Brazilians secures second spot in this season's Absa Premiership for last season's champions with a game to spare.

For SuperSport, the defeat leaves them in seventh spot, but still with some work to do in their final game of the league season to make sure of a top eight finish.

Sundowns got off the the perfect start with Mashaba continuing his impressive run in a more advanced role.

The 'Downs midfielder ran onto a low cross by Anthony Laffor before skipping past a few flat footed defenders and slotting the ball into the back of the net with three minutes on the clock.

The hosts first chance fell to Sibusiso Khumalo in the 17th minute. The left-back, who like Mashaba is more than comfortable in a more attacking role, let fly from range, but Denis Onyango was well positioned to gather with ease.

SuperSport found the equaliser in the 23rd minute through Brockie. The New Zealand international played a neat one-two with Thuso Phala before firing an unstoppable shot past Onyango at his near post for his sixth league goal of the campaign.

Mashaba almost added a second to his name on the half-hour mark. The former Free State Stars man ghosted into the area, but was denied by Thabo September, who's timely challenge sent the ball over Ronwen Williams crossbar.

Phala went within inches of giving SuperSport the lead on the stroke of halftime. The former Platinum Stars man sending his cross-cum-shot just wide of Onyango's post.

The Matsatsantsa wide man continued where he left off after the break forcing Onyango into a good save seconds after the restart before again testing the Uganda shot stopper with a speculative effort from range soon after.

Mashaba restored 'Downs lead in the 61st minute. Khama Billiat put it on a plate for the 'Downs midfielder following a quick counter-attack to complete his double on the night.

Mosimane introduced Wayne Arendse minutes after Gordon Igesund called on Kingston Nkhatha as he looked to hang on to all three points.

David Mahebula tested Onyango with a grass-cutter in the 79th minute, but SuperSport never really tested 'Downs in the closing stages as the Chloorkop based side held on to secure second spot on the log standings.
