Free State Stars overcome Cosmos

Hendrik Somaeb's second-half strike helped Free State Stars overcome Jomo Cosmos 1-0 in an Absa Premiership clash at the Goble Park on Saturday afternoon.

The match got off to a lively start with Ea Lla Koto and Ezenkosi both taking shots at goal within the first five minutes of the game.

Stars midfielder Danny Venter took a shot from range in the tenth minute which was easily gathered by Cosmos goalkeeper Sherwin Naicker.

The home side were seeing most of the ball and in the 25th minute Paulus Masehe's long ball into the Stars box was brilliantly held Naicker.

Stars captain Masehe played a good cross into the Cosmos box in the 33rd minute, but there was nobody to strike the ball into the back of the net.

Both sides pushed for a goal before the half-time break. However, they were unable to find it and the score was goalless during the break.

Stars' livewire Venter tried to beat Cosmos goal-minder Naicker from range in the 54th minute, but his attempt went wide of the target.

However, Ea Lla Koto did find the opening goal on the hour-mark through substitute Hendrik Somaeb, who beat Naicker with a decent finish.

Last season's Absa Premiership Golden Boot winner Moeketsi Sekola dribbled his way into the Cosmos box in the 72nd minute and placed his effort wide of the target.

With nine minutes left on the clock, Stars substitute Nhlanhla Vilakazi burst into Cosmos box and forced Naicker into a great low save.

Despite late attacks from Cosmos, Stars held on tightly onto their slender lead and the match ended 1-0 in favour of the home side.
