Ajax edge Cosmos to end winless streak

Second half goals from Prince Nxumalo and Mosa Lebusa handed Ajax Cape Town a 2-1 win over Jomo Cosmos in an Absa Premiership match at Olen Park on Sunday afternoon.

It was a great start to the game for the home side when Charlton Mashumba was first to a through ball from Mxolisi Macuphu and clinically beat Anssi Jaakkola to make it 1-0 to Cosmos in the third minute.

Ajax took control of the game after that, but struggled to break down a resilient Cosmos defence and get a decent effort on goal.

In fact, the visitors’ first significant effort on goal came in the 25th minute courtesy of a fierce long range shot from Franklyn Cale, but Cosmos goalkeeper Sherwyn Naicker made a great save to deny him.

Ten minutes later Naicker was at his best once more, this time punching away a powerful 20-yard free-kick from Riyaad Norodien.

Despite being under severe pressure in defence, Cosmos were able to hold onto their lead going into the half time break.

Ajax continued in the same fashion at the start of the second stanza and made their pressure pay ten minutes into the half when Prince Nxumalo headed home a Franklyn Cale corner-kick, 1-1.

The Urban Warriors continued to dictate terms and came close to taking the lead in the 70th minute when Rivaldo Coetzee fired inches wide of the post from the edge of the box.

Five minutes later, however, and Ajax did go in front when Nxumalo turned provider and supplied a cross for Mosa Lebusa to head home, 2-1.

Cosmos tried to find their way back into the game, but Ajax held on for the win.
