Brockie punishes Cosmos

A hat-trick from Jeremy Brockie saw SuperSport United to a convincing 4-2 win over Jomo Cosmos in an Absa Premiership match at Olen Park on Saturday afternoon.

The win sees SuperSport into the top eight for the time being with 27 points, at least until Orlando Pirates play later on Saturday night.

The loss for Cosmos sees them continue to dwindle near the relegation zone in 14th place with 17 points, only a point above the University of Pretoria who beat Chippa United also on Saturday afternoon.

SuperSport started positively with Brockie playing Michael Boxall into space on the edge of the box in the eighth, but the latter saw his effort well-saved by the Cosmos keeper.

Ten minutes later the away side took the lead when a mistake by goalkeeper Sherwyn Naicker gifted Brockie a golden scoring chance and he made no mistake to net his seventh of the season, 1-0.

On the half hour mark Kingston Nkhatha nearly doubled SuperSport’s lead when his shot from distance went inches wide of the target.

Cosmos’ first significant chance on goal came in the 33rd minute when a defensive mistake by Mario Booysen allowed Luyolo Nomandela to get off a shot from roughly 18-yards out, but his effort sailed over the target.

Nomandela was in the thick of the action again three minutes later with a long range curler, but this time his effort was well-saved by Ronwen Williams.

The half ended 1-0 in favour of SuperSport.

Seven minutes into the second half the away side nearly found their second goal when Dove Wome played Nkhatha through on goal, but he was thwarted in a one-on-one with Naicker.

In the 58th minute SuperSport did double their lead when Luvolwethu Mpeta played Wome into space with a pin-point pass and he made no mistake with just the keeper to beat, 2-0.

Two minutes later Thusa Phala chipped the ball to Brockie inside the box and he made it 3-0 with a cheeky finish over Naicker, 3-0.

In the 69th minute Brockie completed his hat-trick after tapping home from close range following a swift passing movement by the SuperSport attack, 4-0.

Cosmos did manage to find some consolation with a two goal surge in the last 15 minutes.

Denver Mukamba scored the home side’s first goal in the 78th minute before Mician Mhone found the second in the 85th minute to see the game ended 4-2.
