Team of Choice thump hapless Celtic

Maritzburg United thumped Bloemfontein Celtic 4-0 in an Absa Premiership match at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday night.

The victory takes the Team of Choice to fourth spot on the league standings, while Phunya Sele Sele slip down to seventh place.

The opening stages of the game yielded no real clear-cut chances, but the Team of Choice looked dangerous every time they pushed forward.

As the game progressed, Lebohang Maboe managed to penetrate the Celtic defence and he set up his Maritzburg teammate Deolin Mekoa, whose effort was blocked in the box.

Maboe's effort was also blocked in the Phunya Sele Sele area just before the half-hour mark as the hosts continued to push for the opening goal.

Maritzburg strikers Evans Rusike and Mohau Mokate then unleashed long range shots which went just the over the crossbar with Celtic goalkeeper Patrick Tignyemb rooted to the ground.

The hosts deservedly took the lead in the 38th minute after a period of sustained pressure as Bevan Fransman's header was nodded home by Pogiso Sanoka to make it 1-0 to Maritzburg.

Celtic tried to level matters before the halftime break, but Victor Letsoalo, who had beat his marker brilliantly, saw his low shot easily saved by Maritzburg keeper Richard Ofori.

Tignyemb then made a great save to deny Siphesihle Ndlovu at the near-post to ensure that the first-half ended with Maritzburg leading 1-0 against Celtic.

The Team of Choice continued their dominance in the early stages of the second-half and they managed to double their lead through Mohau Mokate, who finished off a beautiful team goal.

Ndlovu set up Maboe, who then played a low cross which was poked home by Mokate from close range to make it 2-0 to Maritzburg much to the delight of the home crowd.

Phunya Sele Sele then took control of the match - dominating possession, but they were struggling to penetrate the Team of Choice's defence.

Jacky Motshegwa, whose solitary goal helped Celtic beat Maritzburg 1-0 in the first round, found some space outside the hosts' box in the 72nd minute, but his effort went wide of the target.

The hosts then extended their lead four minutes later as Andre Fileccia scored a minute after being introduced to make it 3-0 to Maritzburg - finishing off Bandile Shandu's cross.

Rusike also put his name on the score-sheet in the closing stages as he scored with a powerful shot - sealing Maritzburg's 4-0 victory over Celtic.
