Maritzburg, Sundowns eye Nedbank Cup final spot

Maritzburg United will lock horns with Mamelodi Sundowns in the Nedbank Cup semi-final match at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Sunday. Kick-off is at 3pm, live on SuperSport and live streaming through DStvNow.

The Team of Choice booked their place in the last four after defeating Bloemfontein Celtic 2-1 at home almost three weeks ago. They are in good form at the moment having recorded seven wins, two draws and one defeat in their 10 games in all competitions.

Maritzburg, who have never reached the Nedbank Cup final, are heading into this game oozing with confidence having brushed aside Baroka FC 2-0 away in an Absa Premiership clash last weekend.

Meanwhile, Sundowns progressed into the semi-finals after beating Cape Town City 2-1 away over two weeks ago. The Brazilians have been unstoppable as they are undefeated in their last 15 games in all competitions having registered 11 wins and four draws.

The four-time Nedbank Cup winners, who are looking to win their first trophy since 2015, secured a narrow 1-0 home victory over Lamontville Golden Arrows in an Absa Premiership on Tuesday.

What are the teams saying

Maritzburg United defender Siyanda Xulu: “We’re expecting a very tough game obviously. It’s never easy against Sundowns, but we want to show that we’re the best, and to be the best, you have to beat the best," he said.

"We are playing at home, we want to win the cup, it’s no secret that we want to be in the final. They are one of the top sides, not only in South Africa, but in Africa. So we have to respect them, but we want the result, we’re at home and want to go to the final."

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Pitso Mosimane: “It’s not an easy one, you play Maritzburg, I have never seen a team which has effort like that," he said.

'"They have got lefts and they are awkward, you must analyse the way they play. swear to god I have never seen a formation like this in my whole life, never, never. They play with two strikers outright. Everybody has their own software of playing. It's very difficult."

Maritzburg United key players

Siphesihle Ndlovu: The attacking midfielder has been a revelation for the Team of Choice this season. The 21-year-old, who netted against Baroka FC last weekend, will look to inspire Maritzburg to victory over Sundowns.

Andrea Fileccia: The 26-year-old Belgian forward has been one of the best players in this year's Nedbank Cup having netted three goals in the competition. The former Free State Stars striker will be keen to fire Maritzburg into the final.

Mamelodi Sundowns key players

Ricardo Nascimento: The Brazilian centre back has established himself as Sundowns' best defender having also scored against Golden Arrows in midweek. The 31-year-old will be hoping to play an important role in helping his side reach the final.

Percy Tau: The South Africa international has been one of the best players in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) this season. The left-footed forward, who has scored twice in this year's Nedbank Cup, could be key to Sundowns' win over Maritzburg.
