Highlands Park edge past Chippa in Tembisa

Highlands Park beat Chippa United 2-1 at the Makhulong Stadium in Tembisa on Saturday evening to return to winning ways in the Absa Premiership.

Mothobi Mvala and Lindokuhle Mbatha found the back of the net for the Lions of the North who move up to seventh place on the log standings. Tebogo Tlolane netted what proved to be a mere consolation for the visitors.

The hosts opened the scoring in the 13th minute following a costly error from Daniel Akpeyi in the Chilli Boys goal.

The Nigerian shot-stopper palmed the ball back into a dangerous area from a long throw-in, duly gifting Mvala with an easy finish to give the hosts the lead at the break.

Highlands doubled their advantage in the 65th minute of the match following a swift counter-attack that ended with Peter Shalulile teeing up Mbatha, who finished with aplomb.

The attacker timed his run into the box perfectly before guiding a diving header into the back of the net to send the home fans into delirium.

Chippa dominated proceedings in the closing exchanges with Highlands happy to sit back and defend their two goal lead.

Tlolane, though, made for a nervy finish in Tembisa as he pulled a goal back for the Port Elizabeth-based club in the 83rd minute following a neat one-two with Tercious Malepe.

But, despite throwing everything and the kitchen sink at the hosts defence in the ensuing minutes, Chippa failed to conjure a draw as they saw their unbeaten streak come to an end.
