Chiefs fires past SuperSport

George Maluleka fired Kaizer Chiefs to a 1-0 Absa Premiership win over SuperSport United at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit on Wednesday evening.

Victory moves Chiefs up to fifth place on the log standings, six points off top spot while Matsatsantsa drop down to seventh, following a second successive defeat.

The Amakhosi looked a team with a new coach on the bench, dominating proceedings from the onset as Ernst Middendorp watched on from the sidelines in his first game in charge since returning to the club.

Khama Billiat looked especially menacing and beat the offside trap in the 12th minute before teeing up Leonardo Castro, but with only the goalkeeper to beat, the forward fired his shot over the crossbar.

Billiat turned provider once more in the 19th minute, this time playing a perfectly weighted through ball to Lebogang Manyama, but Ronwen Williams pulled off a great save to deny his former teammate.

Having survived a sustained spell of pressure, SuperSport finally registered their first shot on target in the 28th minute as Evans Rusike tested Virigl Vries. The shot-stopper producing a good save in his first league start for the club as an injured Itumeleng Khune watched on from the stands.

Williams was called into action once more in the 40th minute as Billiat burst through on goal, but the shot-stopper was proving a difficult man to beat as the teams headed for the tunnel at the break with the score deadlocked at 0-0.

Maluleka opened the scoring in the 54th minute against his former employers. Donning the captain's armband in place of Khune and the suspended Willard Katsande, the midfielder rose to the occasion - firing an unstoppable shot past Williams from the edge of the area.

Billiat almost doubled the hosts lead three minutes later, but Williams stood firm to deny the Zimbabwe international once more.

The game continued to ebb and flow with Chiefs hardly troubled by Matsatsantsa as they ultimately walked away with all three points.
