Wits end year on top, Maritzburg rock bottom

The final group of Absa Premiership matches for the year 2018 saw Bidvest Wits strengthen their grip on first place, while Maritzburg United have dropped to the foot of the table after yet another disappointing result.

The five-game weekend opened on Friday night with Wits defeating Chippa United 2-0 at home – thanks to goals from Lehlohonolo Majoro and Thabang Monare – to become the first team to hit the 30-point mark this season and ensure they have a firm hold on pole position heading into the festive-season break.

Saturday’s afternoon match was a Durban derby which saw AmaZulu claim a 2-0 home win over Golden Arrows thanks to a brace from Bonginkosi Ntuli, the early evening clash saw Cape Town City fight back from 0-2 down to win 3-2 against Bloemfontein Celtic (who have now lost four games on the spin), and the late game was a relegation six-pointer which saw Baroka win 1-0 to move off the foot of the table and push Maritzburg down into last place.

The weekend’s action was completed on Sunday with a weather-affected match between Highlands Park and SuperSport United which ended 1-1. The result saw Matsatsantsa rise to third on the log, while the Lions of the North are eighth.

The Absa Premiership heads into the festive-season recess and will return with a full set of fixtures on the weekend of 4-6 January 2019.
