Nedbank Cup last 16 draw fuels excitement

The Nedbank Cup round of 16 draw conducted in Johannesburg tonight, Thursday 31 January 2019 produced some exciting fixtures that will give an opportunity to clubs from amateur ranks and the National First Division to make a name for themselves.

With the twelfth edition of the tournament, the Nedbank Cup continues its investment in football and in community development with the R20 million total prize money on offer for the 2018/19 Premier Soccer League season.

All the 32 participating teams will walk away with at least R100 000 each – a valuable financial injection for the eight National First Division and eight SA Football Association (SAFA) regional teams that form part of the tournament.

The emerging leagues teams that are through to the round of 16 – Maccabi FC, Jomo Cosmos, Witbank Spurs, Mbombela United, TS Galaxy, Richards Bay and Tshakuma Tsha Madzivhandila – have an additional R200 000 guaranteed incentive that will be doubled should they make it through to the Cup quarterfinal stages.

Only two previous tournament winners; Bidvest Wits (2010) and Kaizer Chiefs (2013), remain in the tournament of dreams that is trademarked by the great success stories from lower division sides.

The biggest motivation for all 16 clubs – and indeed the remaining emerging tier sides with last year’s defending champions Free State Stars eliminated in the first round – is an opportunity to have a new name being engraved on the coveted trophy and walking away with the whopping R7 million first prize.

This to go with the ultimate crown of lifting this coveted trophy, with an opportunity of playing in the CAF Confederation Cup next year.

Added to this, the Ke Yona Team Search (KYTS), launched in 2013, will now be entering into its seventh season with exciting new ventures that will be revealed in due course.

Tobie Badenhorst, Nedbank’s Group Head of Sponsorship and Cause Marketing said: “Investing and developing not just football, but our community remains a key objective across all Nedbank portfolios. I would like to congratulate the 16 teams through to this stage of the competition, and to further pay my compliments and best wishes to the teams making it through to this stage for the first time. We remain committed to support these teams and their fans on their journey to realise their aspirations.”

“We will also be continuing with our ever popular KYTS, which has produced incredible talent over the years while the players’ path towards reaching their dream has been one of the popular watches on television. Last year, we received over 17 000 entrants with over 1 million viewers tuning in to their screens each week to watch it all unfold. This year’s edition promises to be just as successful as previous instalments, but this time even more impactful than the previous seasons.”
