Wits' poor form continues, Chiefs and SuperSport on the rise

The weekend’s Absa Premiership action saw Bidvest Wits miss out on the chance to move back to the top of the standings, while Kaizer Chiefs and SuperSport United have brought themselves back onto the fringes of the title race.

Wits’ poor form continued unabated on Saturday night as they slumped to a 2-0 defeat away to AmaZulu (who scored through Bonginkosi Ntuli and Ovidy Karuru). The Clever Boys have won just once in their last seven league outings and will slip out of title contention unless they can address their slide.

Chiefs, on the other hand, edged Maritzburg United 1-0 (Dumisani Zuma with the goal) to bring themselves to within five points of leaders Orlando Pirates with seven rounds of the season remaining. A late run for the Championship still seems unlikely for the Amakhosi, but they have certainly taken strides forward under manager Ernst Middendorp.

Elsewhere on Saturday, Highlands Park claimed a much-needed 2-1 home win over Baroka FC to put some major distance between themselves and the relegation zone, while Polokwane City (another outsider in regards to the title) continued their good recent form with a 2-0 home win over Golden Arrows – featuring another goal from Ghanaian striker Mohammed Anas.

Sunday saw a thrilling win for Black Leopards at home to Chippa United, with the Limpopo side coming from two goals down to defeat Chippa United 3-2 (with a hat-trick from the league’s leading scorer, Mwape Musonda) and open a buffer to the relegation zone, while SuperSport United are among the throng at the top of the log after a Mxolisi Machupu goal saw them edge Free State Stars 1-0 at home.

The Absa Premiership will continue with eight matches spread from 12 to 17 March before going into recess for the international window.
