Derby win for Downs; Bucs, Chiefs hit three as league begins

The first round of Absa Premiership action in the 2019/20 season saw 20 goals scored across eight matches on the weekend, with Bidvest Wits the early leaders on goal difference.

The Clever Boys trounced AmaZulu 3-0 away from home on Saturday night – thanks to goals from Terrence Dzvukamanja, Deon Hotto and captain Thulani Hlatshwayo – to have the edge on a group of six teams which won in the opening matchday.

The other five clubs sitting on three points includes defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns, who outclassed Tshwane rivals SuperSport United 2-0, Orlando Pirates (3-1 winners over Bloemfontein Celtic in Soweto) and Kaizer Chiefs, who needed a late goal from defender Eric Mathoho to edge Highlands Park 3-2 at a packed Makhulong Stadium on Sunday.

The other two winners were Golden Arrows and Polokwane City, who won provincial derbies 1-0 against Maritzburg United and Black Leopards respectively.

Top-flight rookies Stellenbosch put up a determined defensive display to hold Chippa United 0-0 in Port Elizabeth on their PSL debut, while Baroka FC fought back from two goals down to hold Cape Town City 2-2 in the Limpopo province.

The Absa Premiership continues on Tuesday with a midweek clash between Wits and Baroka, before five fixtures are spread over next weekend, 9-11 August.
