Stellies register first Absa Prem win

Stellenbosch FC beat Polokwane City 2-0 at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Wednesday evening for their first Absa Premiership win.

Following seven games without a top-flight victory, last season's National First Division winners finally got over the line thanks to first-half goals from Waseem Isaacs and Iqraam Rayners.

Victory moves Stellies up to 14th place on the log standing and out of the relegation zone. Rise and Shine drop down to fourth following a second defeat in succession.

The visitors opened the scoring in the 15th minute through Isaacs. The burly forward turned his man on the halfway line before racing into the area and driving a low shot past George Chigova for his fourth goal of the season.

Stellies doubled their lead five minutes later as last season's NFD golden boot winner found the back of the net for the second time within the space of five days. Not to be outdone by his strike partner, Rayners raced through on goal before finishing with aplomb to silence the home crowd.

Having come back from a two goal deficit to rescue a point this past weekend, Stellies were mindful of the fact that Rise and Shine could condemn them to the same treatment if they weren't cautious.

And cautious they were, with Steve Barker's men happy to sit deep within their own half for much of the remainder of the match.

Boy de Jong was finally forced into a save in the 61st minute; getting down well to divert a cross from danger with Puleng Tlolane lurking.

Polokwane, though, found it increasingly difficult to break down the Stellenbosch defence and ultimately failed in their attempt to find the back of the net as the Cape club claimed all three points.
