Sundowns fail to beat ten-man Wits

Despite dominating for large portions of the match Mamelodi Sundowns were unable to beat Bidvest Wits as their Absa Premiership match at Loftus Versfeld on Tuesday night ended goalless.

It was a cagey opening half hour to the match with neither team menacing in attack due to some woeful decision making in the final third.

Nonetheless, Sundowns persisted and created the first decent chance in the 33rd minute when Sphelele Mkhulise met a left-wing cross from Themba Zwane but his 12-yard header went just wide of the target.

Ten minutes later the Brazilians threatened down the left flank again with Teboga Langerman finding Lebohang Maboe with a pin-point cross, but Wits goalkeeper Ricardo Goss produced a great save to deny him.

The half ended goalless.

The Clever Boys were the first to fashion a scoring opportunity in the second half when Solly Khunyedi let fly from the edge of the box in the 53rd minute, but his stinging effort went inches wide of the target.

Wits suffered a massive blow four minutes later when they were reduced to ten men following a second yellow card for Buhle Mkhwanazi.

Just after the hour Sibusiso Vilakazi came close to scoring when some beautiful skill by the striker saw him create space inside the box, but his shot from 12-yards out struck the post.

Vilakazi should have given the Brazilians the lead in the 82nd minute when a swift passing move saw him unmarked ten-yards out, but he was superbly denied from close range by Goss.

Sundowns continued to push forward in the final ten minutes, but Wits defended stoutly and managed to hold on for a goalless draw.
