Chapman steers Wits to victory

Ryan Chapman scored three minutes from time as Bidvest Wits defeated Maritzburg United 2-1 in an entertaining Absa Premiership clash played at the Bidvest Stadium on Wednesday night.

Mario Booysens had given United the lead but Asive Langwe scored to bring the Clever Boys into the match before Chapman found the winner.

In the ninth minute the Wits fans thought that their team had taken the lead when Sibusiso Vilakazi brilliantly controlled the ball on the edge of the box before cracking a sweet right footed volley that beat Maritzburg keeper Shu-Aib Walters, but it went into the side netting.

Two minutes later Ryan Chapman should have really given the Clever Boys the lead when he was faced with Walters in a one-on-one situation, but with all the time and space in the world, the former Santos forward could only shoot wide from close range.

With the home side having the most of the early exchanges they would be brought back to life in the 14th minute when Mario Booysens connected with Dillion Sheppard’s in-swinging left footed corner-kick to head home at the near post, 1-0.

Papy Faty should have levelled for the Clever Boys in the 25th minute when he rose the highest in the box to head Matthew Pattison’s corner, but he missed the target from six-yards with the Maritzburg defence at sea.

Wits continued with their tight pressure hold on the Natal outfit and were denied by the brilliance of Walters who parried away Chapman’s shot from six-yards in the 27th minute bringing an end to a fantastic build up of inter-charging passes from the Wits attackers before the shot was taken.

All that pressure from the home side was finally fruitful in the 38th minute. Pattison picked out Mzikayise Mashaba on the left wing and the winger sent in a cross to the far post which Langwe headed home to make it 1-1.

Six minutes into the second half Faty had another opportunity, this time he unleashed a thunderous shot from the edge of the box which cracked the post with Walters certainly beaten.

Three minutes later Walters was again tested when Pattison’s dipping low shot from 30-yards painfully went over.

With three minutes remaining in the match Chapman scored the winner. He picked up the ball just outside the box, turned and looked up before hitting a screamer of a shot that flew into the corner of the net, 2-1.
