Ajax and AmaZulu share the spoils

Ajax Cape Town and AmaZulu failed to produce any chances worthy of a goal at Cape Town Stadium as their Absa Premiership encounter ended 0-0 on Friday evening.

AmaZulu’s resurgence in the league saw them come into the game with their confidence at a high, making it all the more difficult for Ajax to come away with the points.

Sander Westerveld’s ‘Man of the Match display’ in the goalless draw against AmaTuks saw him regain his spot as the No 1 goalkeeper on the night, while Paul Rusike and Khama Billiat both started despite having returned from Zimbabwe on Wednesday.

The opening 15 minutes of the fixture brought about end-to-end attacking play between the two teams, before AmaZulu created the first significant attack of the game which forced Nazeer Allie to make a clearance off the line.

Moments later and the defender pulled off yet another divine interception when he threw his body in front of Good Dlamini’s shot just inside the box, the 27-year-old lucky as replays show it touched his hand.

Just before the half hour mark, Nkanyiso Cele was shown yellow for a rash challenge which resulted in a free-kick for the home side.

Billiat floated the set-piece into the box, but Tapuwa Kapini was equal to in running off his line and grabbing the ball.

Mabhuti Khenyeza then stung the palms of the away shot-stopper with an effort from the edge of the box, as the two teams played out the remaining goalless five minutes of the half.

The early stages of second half looked promising for the Urban Warriors as they won a series of corner kicks in the opening 10 minutes of the half. However, like most of their chances, they failed to convert.

Kulegani Madondo had a great chance to stun the home side from distance, but his 60th minute strike sailed wide of goal, leaving Westerveld unfazed in goal.

Four minutes later and a chance fell to Travis Graham. The youngster whipped in a powerful strike from 15-yards out, only for his effort to fire inches above the crossbar.

The remainder of the game fell into a frustrating lull for the spectators as neither side could find of the back of the net, ending the match goalless.
