Versleijen: We must finish our chances

Ajax Cape Town coach Jan Versleijen was left frustrated at his team’s lack of potency in attack, following their 0-0 draw with AmaZulu on Friday night.

It was the visiting side who had the better chances at a cold and windy night Cape Town Stadium, although over the 90 minutes it was the two sets of defences who came out on top.

The result was more welcomed by Usuthu coach Craig Rosslee, who saw his side move into 11th spot on the Absa Premiership table.

But for the Cape side, who have drawn their last three games, and have not scored in their last two outings, there was a sense of disappointment at not having picked up maximum points on home turf.

Versleijen wants his team to show more urgency in the final third of the field as they prepare for their next match, away to Mamelodi Sundowns.

“If you get into areas where you have a chance on goal, you must pull the trigger,” said the Dutchman, who went on to try and find some positives from the display.

“Second half we got a bit better – first half belonged to AmaZulu and we saved the ball twice on the goal-line.

“Second half we tried to push, but we have to do it (shoot when the chance arises).

“I take a lot of positives from this game, especially the second half, there are things we can take for confidence into the next games.

“Mabuthi [Khenyeza] is an experienced player and he showed in the second half what he can do. He just needs a bit of luck that he can score a goal and that can make a big difference for our team,” added Versleijen.

AmaZulu mentor Craig Rosslee was satisfied with the net outcome of the match, but wants to see his side improve as they head into a home clash against Orlando Pirates. “I thought we defended well in patches and when we kicked up a gear from second to third we had them going, we had some good moves, but we were not consistent enough, we didn’t do it for 90 minutes.

“I was happy with the point, but not with our overall game. It took us 25 minutes to get into the game.

“Now we’ll go prepare for the match against Pirates. It’s a tough league, but at home we must target maximum points,” he said.
