Mashego seals Swallows win

Katlego Mashego’s beautifully taken goal was the difference as Moroka Swallows got back to winning ways when they defeated Maritzburg United 1-0 in their Absa Premiership encounter at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Friday night.

Swallows had their first meaningful attempt at goal when their lanky defender Luvhengo Mungomeni had a crack at goal from just outside the box in the 11th minute but his effort went over the bar.

Swallows had the ball in the back of the net ten minutes later but Mashego’s goal was flagged offside.

On the half hour mark, Swallows were presented a free-kick just outside the box but Mashego could not keep his shot down as it failed to dip in and went over the bar.

In the 40th minute Delron Buckley chipped in a delicate ball for striker Cuthbert Malajila but the Zimbabwean -who was looking for his 11th league goal of the season- headed straight to Swallows keeper Greg Etafia from close range.

Three minutes before the interval, United left-back Ruben Cloete found some space in the middle of the park and unleashed a powerful shot from 20-yards that went wide of goal.

But Swallows struck a killer blow with the last kick of the first half.

Dikgang Mabalane used his blitz pace down the right wing and fed in Mashego who then took his time to evade his markers in the box and exquisitely scored with a low left foot shot.

Five minutes into the second half United midfielder Michael Morton forced a superb save out of Etafia.

Dillon Sheppard dragged the ball back for Morton and his initial shot was blocked by his teammate but he had a second bite at the cherry and Etafia was up to the task as he flicked the ball over the bar.

On the hour mark Swallows should have made it 2-0 when Chabangu’s volley from close range, which certainly looked on target, took a deflection off United centre-back Mohammed Awal for a crucial stop.

In the 68th minute United fluffed a great opportunity when Malajila was one on one with Etafia but the United player shot wide.

Four minutes before the end of the match, United defender Mario Booysens could have levelled for the home side but his header from a set piece just shaved the cross bar with Etafia beaten.
