Wits cruise past AmaZulu

Bidvest Wits maintained their grip on fourth spot when they recorded a 3-1 victory over AmaZulu at the Bidvest Stadium on Saturday afternoon in both side’s penultimate match of the Absa Premiership.

Papy Faty, Siboniso Gumede and Ryan Chapman netted for the Clever Boys while Bongani Ndulula got the solitary goal for the away side.

Wits went into the lead in the ninth minute through a superbly taken volley by their Burundian midfielder. After AmaZulu failed to extinguish a Wits attack the ball fell to Faty who on the volley, hit a low shot that AmaZulu keeper Tapuwa Kapini could not save.

AmaZulu got the equaliser in the 17th minute when they split open the Wits defence that lacked communication among themselves when Ndulula tapped in the ball from close range into an empty net to make it 1-1.

With just under ten minutes left before the halftime break, the home side reclaimed their lead. AmaZulu failed to sufficiently clear a Wits corner and the ball was lobbed over the defence for an unmarked Gumede to slot home from just six-yards out.

Three minute into the second half Wits were inches from taking a two goal advantage when Tinashe Nengomasha connected with a rebound and unleashed a thunderous shot from just outside the box but it narrowly went wide.

Wits made it 3-1 in the 74th minute when AmaZulu failed to clear a corner kick. The initial Wits headed attempt at goal was cleared off the line by the AmaZulu defence, but Chapman headed the rebound from close range to give the Clever Boys a two goal cushion.
