Dikwena held by Black Aces

Henrico Botes became the leading scorer in Platinum Stars’ history, but could not help his side to victory as they were held 2-2 by Mpumalanga Black Aces in their Absa Premiership clash at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Namibian international came off the bench to net his 28th goal for the club and move past Dingane Masanabo on the club’s all-time scorers list.

But a Dennis Masina strike eight minutes from time earned a good point for Black Aces, who were more than a match for the MTN8 winners.

Mogakolodi Ngele had put Dikwena into an early lead, with Clifford Ngobeni equalising for the visitors just after halftime.

Stars coach Allan Freese kept the same lone-up that defeated Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 in their Telkom Knockout quarterfinal on Saturday night.

That meant Siphelele Mthembu played a lone striking role, supported by the roving Botswana international Mogakolodi Ngele.

Black Aces coach Clive Barker handed a first league start to veteran defender Thabang Rooi, with the first-choice centre-back partnership Eduardo Ferreira and Method Mwanjali both missing.

Stars made a fast start as Ngele latched onto an Mthembu pass to open the scoring inside the first two minutes.

Mabhuti Khenyeza came close to an equalizer when he fired wide 10 minutes later, while Sandile Zuke also warmed the palms of Siyabonga Mpontshane in the home goal.

Mduduzi Nyanda fired a shot on goal as the home side went in search of a second, but it was Black Aces who came closest as Mpontshane made a superb save to deny Ngobeni.

But the midfielder did get onto the scoresheet five minutes into the second half, turning the ball home after Mpontshane could only parry the ball into his path.

Botes netted his historic goal on 68 minutes from an Nyanda cross to give Dikwena the lead once more, but again they could not hold on.

Black Aces substitute Masina provided a clinical finish to bring the visitors level and give them a valuable point.

Both these sides will be in action over the weekend, with Stars away at Moroka Swallows on Friday night, while Black Aces host fellow strugglers Lamontville Golden Arrows on Saturday.
