Arrows edge Maritzburg in KZN derby

Goals by Thanduyise Khuboni and Bonginkosi Ntuli guided Golden Arrows to a 2-1 win over Maritzburg United in an Absa Premiership encounter played at King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi on Sunday afternoon. Ayanda Nkosi found the back of the net for the Team of Choice.

Mark Harrison made three changes to the team that lost 3-1 to SuperSport United, while Clinton Larsen made no fewer than five changes to the outfit that lost 2-1 to Telkom Knockout finalists Platinum Stars last time out.

Golden Arrows nearly got off to the perfect start through Vuyisile Ntombayithethi. The midfielder’s shot from range caught Shu-Aib Walters unawares, before cannoning off the top off the crossbar.

The referee dished out four yellow cards in the opening 15 minutes of the encounter. The game wasn’t particularly feisty, but the referee seemed to take a liking to his cards.

Both teams were playing attractive football, but failed to really trouble the opposition goalkeeper in the opening half an hour of the match. It wasn’t for a lack of trying, but rather poor quality build-up play.

Arrows were the better team throughout the first stanza and certainly ended the half the better of the two sides.

Walters made a good recovery to keep out Philani Shange’s effort after fumbling while trying to gather a ball into the area.

Neither side created any clear cut opportunities in what was a stale first 45, leaving it goalless at the break.

Frank Sarfo-Gyamfi went close for the Team of Choice on the hour mark. The Ghanaian midfielder had the beating of Siya Mngoma but not Mzivukile Tom, who cleared off the line.

Abafana Bes’thende were handed an opportunity to open the scoring after Dumisani Zwane was adjudged to have been impeded by Michael Morton inside the area. Khuboni duly stepped up and placed the ball into the top corner.

Bonginkosi Ntuli doubled the host lead three minutes later with a cracking effort. The sturdy striker bamboozled Peter Petersen before curling his effort past Walters, 2-0.

Ayanda Nkosi pulled one back for United in the 71st minute. Mohamed Awal’s cross was beautifully met on the volley by Nkosi and Mngoma didn’t stand a chance.

Arrows held on for the win and move out of the relegation zone.
