Stars too strong for Maritzburg

Mahlatse Makudubela scored 12 minutes from time to give Platinum Stars a 2-1 victory over Maritzburg United in their Absa Premiership clash at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace on Saturday afternoon.

It is sweet revenge for Stars, who were knocked out of the Nedbank Cup by the selfsame Maritzburg side just last weekend.

Mduduzi Nyanda had the home side ahead 10 minutes after halftime, but they were pegged back by an equaliser from Terrence Mandaza, though the KwaZulu-Natal side could not hold onto a point.

It is just a second league win in their last seven for Stars and keeps their hopes of qualifying for the CAF club competitions alive.

Robert Ng’ambi, Siphelele Mthembu and Thabiso Semenya all missed early chances for the home side as they created the better opportunities in the first half.

The deadlock was finally broken on 55 minutes when Mthembu teed-up Nyanda for a well-taken left-footed strike to give Stars the lead.

That lead was wiped out by Mandaza, who profited from some hesitant defending to equalise for his side 10 minutes later.

Ng’ambi should have put his side back in the lead when he found himself one-on-one with Virgil Vries in the visiting goal and just six yards out, but his effort was saved.

However, Stars did find the winning goal as the influential Nyanda drove a low ball into the area and Makudubela turned the ball home for his first league goal for Dikwena having previously netted in the Nedbank Cup against Great North.

Next up for Stars is a home meeting with Moroka Swallows on Tuesday, while United are away at SuperSport United a day later.
