Maritzburg end winless record against Matsatsantsa

Maritzburg United recorded their first league victory over SuperSport United with a 3-1 win in an Absa Premiership encounter at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville on Wednesday evening.

Goals from Heinrich Isaacks, David Booysen and Terrance Mandaza secured the Team of Choice a first win in 16 league outings against Matsatsantsa. Bradly Grobler opened the scoring for the hosts.

Maritzburg squandered a glorious chance in the sixth minute before SuperSport United opened the scoring a minute later through Grobler.

Orlando Smeekes was gifted an opportunity after Ronwen Williams mistimed his surge out his area but the Team of Choice winger somehow failed to capitalise.

Matsatsantsa then opened the scoring with their first attack, Thuso Phala picked out Bradley Grobler who produced a superb finish to open the scoring on the night.

Enocent Mkhabela’s rocket from range was brilliantly kept out by Vries before the Team of Choice pulled level through Heinrich Isaacks in the 22nd minute.

Kurt Lentjies nodded Ashley Hartog’s chip over the SuperSport defence into the path of Isaacks who prodded into an open net.

Five minutes later and it was 2-1 in favour of the visitors. David Booysen rose well to nod in Bongolethu Jayiya’s corner-kick at the near post to complete the old one-two.

Smeekes again failed to punish Williams after the Bafana keeper failed to gather the ball before Vries did well to out a Grobler header on the cusp of halftime.

Enocent Mkhablea should’ve levelled things up once again in the 83rd minute but the former Platinum Stars midfielder could only manage to direct his attempt straight at Vries from point blank range.

As was the case in the first half the home side were immediately punished at the other side of the park after missing a sitter.

Terrance Mandaza played a neat one-two with Hartog before slipping the ball past Williams to secure all three points.

SuperSport piled forward in the dying minutes but Vries was up to the task, producing a string of quality saves to secure all three points for the visitors.

The loss sees United drop to eighth spot on the log while Maritzburg remain 13th.
