United put two past Ajax

Maritzburg United bounced back from defeat when they beat Ajax Cape Town 2-0 in their Absa Premiership encounter at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday night.

Bongolwethu Jayiya opened the scoring early in the second half before Michael Morton scored his first ever Premiership goal from the penalty spot.

The first chance fell for the visitors in the 9th minute when Eleazar Rodgers flicked a long ball from Anssi Jaakkola into the path of Tashreeq Morris, but he fired a tame shot straight at Shu-aib Walters from inside the box.

United had a similar opportunity at the other end in the 18th minute as Terrance Mandaza headed a long ball towards Heinrich Isaacks on the right side of the box, but his low effort was deflected wide by Jaakkola.

The Ajax goalkeeper showed his agility again the 26th minute, diving quickly to his left to stop a header from Mohammed Awal, who had connected with a freekick from Bongolwethu Jayiya.

The Urban Warriors were restricted to long range efforts in the 32nd minute with both Granwald Scott and Toriq Losper firing over the crossbar.

In the 35th minute, Nhlanhla Vilakazi’s cross from the left side found Mandaza inside the penalty area but the Zimbabwean striker directed his header wide of the target.

Vilakazi then made a good run into the box to meet a cross from Jayiya in the 43rd minute, but he skewed his header wide of the far post as the two sides went into the break with the scores level at 0-0.

The hosts broke the deadlock in the 49th minute when Ruben Cloete delivered a cross into the far post, which was nodded down by Isaacks for Jayiya to volley home from close range.

The visitors came close to levelling matters in the 55th minute when Scott drilled a low shot past a number of bodies from the right side of the box, but Walters dived to his right to make a solid stop.

United were then awarded a penalty in the 63rd minute when Nazeer Allie was adjudged to have fouled Vilakazi inside the box. Morton made no mistake from the penalty spot, sending Jaakkola the wrong way.

Ajax came close to pulling one goal back in the 71st minute when substitute Koen van de Laak unleashed a powerful strike from outside the box which Walters parried into play, while Morris’ follow-up shot was deflected wide.

Steve Komphela’s side almost added a third in the 80th minute when Jayiya slipped the ball through for Mandaza on the left side of the box, but Jaakkola came off his line to make a block with his feet.

The visitors broke forward immediately and almost scored at the other end as Morris’ cross found Rodgers inside the box, but the latter saw his strong header tipped over the crossbar by Walters.

Ajax remain in 10th place with 35 points, while Maritzburg United moved up to 11th place with 34 points.
