Kanyenda brace sinks Aces

A brace from Essau Kanyenda handed Polokwane City a 2-1 win over Mpumalanga Black Aces in an Absa Premiership match at the Kanyamazane Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Both teams squandered possession and struggled to build any sustained period of play in the first 45 minutes.

Neither team seemed able to make any clinical decisions in the final third which resulted in a lot of the play being congested in the midfield.

In fact, the first half only really produced one shot on goal and that happened to be the game’s opening goal in the 14th minute when Essau Kanyenda turned home a Jabu Maluleke pass, 1-0.

Polokwane did not deserve their lead at the break, but they took their only chance in front of goal and were the happier of the two teams at halftime.

The second 45 was a much better affair and saw Aces applying pressure from the word go.

Themba Zwane tried his luck from the edge of the box in the 49th minute, but he saw his effort well-saved by the keeper.

A minute later Aces made their second half pressure pay when Abia Nale restored parity after latching onto a Mabhuti Kenyeza pass and then making no mistake to beat the keeper, 1-1.

In the 58th minute Polokwane were afforded the chance to re-take the lead when Bafana Nhlapo pulled down Kanyenda inside the box and the referee awarded a penalty.

Vukile Mngqibisa stepped up for Polokwane, but failed to convert from the spot as Nhalpo produced a fine save to deny him.

Four minutes later, however, and Polokwane did take the lead when Kanyenda grabbed his second of the afternoon with an expert finish after latching onto a through ball from Kabelo Lichaba, 2-1.

Aces tried to get back into the match after that, but were unable to break down the Polokwane defence as they held on for all three points.
