Zulu helps Chippa United win v Bucs

David Zulu scored the only goal of the match as Chippa united defeated Orlando Pirates 1-0 in an Absa Premiership encounter at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday night.

The Bafana Bafana striker scored the deciding goal from a solo effort early in the first half before a solid defensive performance in the second half seured maximum points for the home side.

The visitors came close to opening the scoring as early as the second minute when Ayanda Gcaba met Mpho Makola’s cross at the far post, only to send his header against the crossbar.

The Chilli Boys had an opportunity from a freekick at the other end two minutes later but Thamsanqa Sangweni curled his effort inches wide of the upright.

The deadlock was broken in the 7th minute as David Zulu collected the ball on the right and weaved his way past three Pirates defenders before beating Senzo Meyiwa with a low shot.

The Buccaneers pushed forward in search of the equalizer but Roger Sikhakhane’s men stood firm, with the next threat coming from Kermit Erasmus’ strike which sailed over the crossbar in the 26th minute.

Two minutes later Thabo Matlaba unleashed a powerful strike from outside the box but Mbongeni Mzimela was positioned well to make a clean save.

Pirates were awarded a freekick in a dangerous position in the 38th minute as Erasmus had been brought down just outside the box but Makola’s dipping effort went wide of the post as Chippa took a 1-0 lead to the break.

The second half saw the Buccaneers committing players forward but the Chilli boys were able to keep numbers behind the ball to keep them at bay.

Coach Vladimir Vermezovic made a double change just before the hour mark, bring on Sifiso Myeni and Lehlohonolo Majoro in the place of Thabo Qalinge and Makola.

Majoro had Bucs’ best chnce in the second half when he controlled a cross from Myeni in the centre of the penalty area before shooting on the turn, sending his shot just wide.

With Pirates pushing for the equalizer Chippa had a number of opportunities to catch them on the break and in the 82nd minute Mhlengi Cele tested Meyiwa with a long range effort after Matlaba had given the ball away carelessly.

The Buccaneers won a couple of corners in added time but solid defending from captain James Okwuosa and Mbuyiselo Sambu ensured that Chippa walked away with maximum points.
