Maritzburg hand SuperSport first loss

A brace from Terrance Mandaza secured an emphatic 4-1 win for Maritzburg United over SuperSport United in an Absa Premiership encounter at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Mondli Cele and Mohammed Anas also scored for the visitors as they recorded their second win in succession in Atteridgeville.

Lebogang Manyma's strike was not enough for the hosts as they saw thier three game winning run in the league come to and end.

Gordon Igesund named the same starting XI that beat AmaTuks 3-0 on the weekend as his team eyed a fourth successive league win.

Steve Komphela meanwhile made only one change to the outfit that trumped Platinum Stars 3-1 on Saturday. Ryan de Jongh dropped to the bench with Mohammed Awal called into the first eleven.

Matsatsanta were quick out of the blocks and had a great oppurtunity to open the scoring with two minutes on the clock.

A corner-kick fell to Clayton Daniels who turned his man before directing a powerful ball across the face of goal, the ball found Thuso Phala, but the winger was unable to direct his header on target.

SuperSport continuted to find holes in the Maritzburg defence with a brilliant defensive block denying Dove Wome what would surely have been yet another goal for the Togo international.

The visitors first chance of the match fell to Cele in the 34th minute. A floating cross picked out the the Team of Choice midfielder at the far post, but he was unable to force Ronwen Williams into a save.

Despite all of SuperSport's early pressure, it was Maritzburg who opened the scoring in the 41st minute thorugh Mandaza who headed Ashley Hartog's cross past Williams from close range.

SuperSport should have been level at the break, but Ndlovu was superbly denied by Vries on the cusp of half-time. Sibusiso Khumalo did well to get back to his feet before picking out Ndlovu, but the former Maccabi Haifa striker was unable to find the back of the net from point-blank range.

Ndlovu continued were he left off after the interval. A cheeky dummy by Lebogang Manyama left Ndlovu with a clear strike at goal, but Vries was yet again up to the task.

SuperSport had their equaliser in 50th minute through Manyama. Wome played in the former Ajax Cape Town atttacker, who stepped infield before hammering his shot into the back of the net via the inside of the post.

Maritzburg restored their lead a minute before the hour mark. Mandaza beat the offside trap before heading Khumbulani Banda's cross past Williams to complete his brace.

Cele doubled the visitors lead in the 63rd minute,running onto Mandaza's through ball before directing his effort into the back of the net.

Things went from bad to worse for the hosts who conceded another in the 76th minute. Cele the provider this time, playing in the Ghanian forward Mohammed Anas who finished with aplomb.

The win see's Maritzburg leapfrog SuperSport and into fifth place on the log standings. Matsatsantsa meanwhile slide down two places to 10th.

The wins rockets Maritzburg up to third place in the league standigns while SuperSport slide down to 10th.
