Stars ease relegation woes

A ten man Free State Stars beat Bidvest Wits 1-0 in an Absa Premiership match at Goble Park on Wednesday to ease their relegation woes

The away side started the better of the two sides with the first effort on goal in the fourth minute, but Thulani Hlatshwayo’s shot from the edge of the box went narrowly wide.

Five minutes later Sandile Zuke’s shot from distance was on target, but found the safe hands of Stars’ keeper Daouda Diakite.

Ea Lla Koto’s first significant effort on goal came in the 12th minute, but Hendrik Somaeb's stinging effort was well-saved by Moneeb Josephs.

Wits were on the attack again in the 20th minute with Henrico Botes working his way into a shooting position just inside the 18-yard area, but he was superbly denied by Diakite.

On the half hour mark Thulani Hlatshwayo came close to finding the opening goal, but his shot from an acute angle on the right struck the side-netting.

Stars had the last say of the half with Somaeb firing a powerful strike inches over the crossbar with the keeper well-beaten.

Neither side could find a goal before the break.

The second half stared on a bad not for Free State who saw Paulus Masehe shown a straight red card for a studs up tackle on Zuke.

With the home side reduced to ten men they sat back in defence and tried to hold on for a point.

Wits saw more of the ball, but struggled to break down a resilient Ea Lla Koto defence.

Instead, the goal came at the other end with Somaeb giving the home side the lead in the 75th minute, 1-0.

The Students tried to find their way back into the game, but were unable to do so Stars picked up a valuable three points.
