Mahachi and Shitolo sink Pirates

Golden Arrows upset Soweto giants Orlando Pirates after second-half goals saw the Durban side run out 2-0 winners in their Absa Premiership match at Orlando Stadium in Soweto on Wednesday night.

The first effort on goal came in the second minute when Mabhuti Khenyeza fired a 24-yard free-kick goalwards, but his shot was well-saved by the Buccaneers goalkeeper.

The next effort on goal came because of mistake in defence by Arrows which allowed Kermit Erasmus an opportunity to score after miss-communication between the keeper and Nkanyiso Mngwengwe. The Pirates striker, though, shot wide with an empty goal at his mercy in the eighth minute.

Two minutes later, at the opposite end of the park, a mistake in defence by Siyabonga Sangweni allowed Kudakwashe Mahachi a sight on goal, but his low long-range stinger was comfortably saved.

The game went into a dull period after that with chances on goal at a bare minimum.

In the 30th minute Pirates were a bit unfortunate to see Happy Jele leave the field injured. He was replaced by Edwin Gyimah who moved into the centre of defence while Thabo Matlaba shifted to right back and Ayanda Gcaba to left back.

Two minutes later Luvuyo Memela showed good pace to drive into the Arrows box, but Maximilian Mbaeva showed real bravery to dive at the feet of the Pirates man and clear the ball.

Mbaeva made two spectacular saves in a row in the 40th minute to deny Pirates the opening goal. First he stopped Erasmus from point blank range after he latched onto a cross from Memela and was then quickly to his feet to deny Mpho Mvelase as well.

The half ended 0-0.

Three minutes into the second half Pirates had a great chance to open the scoring when Erasmus slipped Memela through on goal, but he drove his 16-yard shot into the side-netting.

In the 52nd minute Arrows took the lead courtesy of a low shot from the edge of the box by Mahachi.

Pirates took control of the game after that and began mounting pressure on the Arrows goal, but their defence held firm for the most part.

In the 66th minute Gift Motupa came close to equalising, but his 18-yard shot was saved by the fingertips of Mbaeva.

Six minutes later Mbaeva was called into action and once more he did not disappoint to close down Lehlohonolo Majoro who was through on goal.

In the 83rd minute Arrows made certain of the three points with a rare foray forward that concluded with Gladwin Shitolo driving the ball home from 16-yards out.
