Wits edge Chiefs in PSL opener

Bidvest Wits got their 2016-17 Absa Premiership campaign off to a flying start with goals from Elias Pelembe and Thulani Hlatshwayo leading the club to a 2-1 win over Kaizer Chiefs at Bidvest Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Lorenzo Gordinho scored what proved to be a mere consolation with eight minutes remaining - his goal was too little to late as the Clever Boys brought an end to their winless run ,in their own backyard, to the Soweto giants.

It is their first home win over the Amakhosi in a league clash since the first half of the 2002-03 season.

Eager to put an end to their poor home record against the Glamour Boys; Gavin Hunt started with no fewer than four new signings. Eleazar Rodgers, Frank Mhango, Thabang Monare and Xola Mlambo all involved from the onset.

Ramahlwe Mphahlele started in defence for the visitors.

The Clever Boys started in bullish fashion with Rodgers - who effectively replaced Henrico Botes at the club - going close to the opener on 13 minutes.

Daine Klate has firmly established himself as one of the best crossers in the Premier Soccer League and the former Orlando Pirates winger fired in another precise ball to set up the Rodgers, who glanced his header attempt wide of goal.

The hosts were the dominant force and just as Steve Komphela's troops started to fight their way back into the contest, the Clever Boys struck through Pelembe in the 34th minute.

Superb skill by Mhango freed space for Sifiso Hlanti down the left wing; the fullback with a pin-point cross for the Mozambique international who produced an excellent diving finish.

Itumeleng Khune had to be at his best to deny the Students a second before the break, the Bafana Bafana goalkeeper continuing where he left off in Rio with a smothering stop to deny Rodgers from close range.

Bidvest Wits continued where they left off after the break with Hlatshwayo doubling the Clever Boys lead in the 65th minute. The Bafana Bafana defender with a towering header from a Klate corner-kick.

Gavin Hunt's men looked sure cruise to all three points, but Chiefs finally kicked into gear in the closing exchanges.

Gordinho pulled a goal back with an expert header from a William Twala free-kick on 82 minutes before Emmanuel Letlotlo was afforded a chance to steal a point on debut in stoppage time for the visitors.

The Chiefs academy graduate unable to rattle the back of the net after Moeneeb Josephs denied Edward Manqele.
