Matsatsantsa hammer Arrows to reclaim top spot

SuperSport United climbed back to the summit of the Absa Premiership standings in the aftermath of a 5-2 win over Golden Arrows at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville on Wednesday evening.

The game came to life in the second-half following a rather cagey opening stanza, with all the goals coming after the break.

Goals from Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Thuso Phala,Cole Alexander, Morgan Gould and an own goal from Chiukepo Msowoya rounded off the scoring for Matsatsantsa while Kudakwashe Mahachi and Lerato Lamola found the back of the net for the visitors.

The best chance of the first-half fell to Knox Mutizwa in the eighth minute, but with only Reyaad Pieterse to beat the Abafana Bes'thende midfielder failed to hit the back of the net.

The match finally sprang into action two minutes after the break with Letsholonyane firing his attempt past a helpless Nkosingiphile Gumede.

Thuso Phala doubled the hosts lead two minutes later. On as a second-half substitute for Mandla Masango, the winger made an instant impact as he powered past his marker before directing his his shot into the corner of the net.

Mahachi pulled a goal back for Arrows in the 57th minute, but SuperSport saw their lead restored through rather fortunate circumstances soon after as Msowoya directed the ball into the back of his own net.

SuperSport made it 4-1 through Alexander in the 66th minute. Superb interplay between 'Yeye', Phala and Thabo Mnyamane opening space for the midfielder who finished with aplomb.

Lamola handed Arrows a glimmer of hope in the 75th minute as he found a way past Pieterse, but SuperSport made sure of the result six minutes later as Gould powered home a header.

Stuart Baxter's troops with an adequate response to title rivals Bidvest Wits, with the Clever Boys having thumped Ajax Cape Town 5-0 on Tuesday.
