Ngwenya's goal helps Aces win

Goals from David Mathebula and Manqoba Ngwenya saw MP Black Aces break a nine game losing streak when they beat SuperSport United 2-1 in an Absa Premiership match at the Puma Rugby Stadium on Wednesday night.

Both Aces and SuperSport struggled to find their feet in the opening minutes of the match and consequently both teams made some silly mistakes by gifting possession back to their opposition with sloppy passing.

This resulted in an early chance for either side. First off, in the fourth minute Aces’ Benedict Vilakazi let fly with a powerful shot from roughly 25-yards out that just sailed over the crossbar.

Then five minutes later United got their first opportunity to score when Ricardo Katza rose highest to meet a Tebogo Langerman corner-kick. Katza’s six yard header, though, was magnificently saved by Francis Chansa diving to his right to parry the effort away from goal.

Thereafter, both sides found their rhythm and started passing the ball around nicely. There was a huge battle going on in the midfield and David Mathebula was very impressive for the Mpumalanga side. His work-rate was extremely high and he was aggressive in his tackles as he tried to assert his side’s dominance.

Nonetheless, somewhat against the run of play Aces’ suffered some bad luck when Joseph Henyekane found the back of his own net in the 27th minute. Henyekane was very unlucky as he accidentally headed the ball into the Aces net from a corner that was whipped in at quite a speed, 1-0.

Still, despite going down the home side did not let that get the better of them and they hit back a minute before the half time break through their star player on the night, David Mathebula.

Mathebula found the back of the net for the Mpumalanga side as he drove a 20-yard free-kick past the defensive wall and into the right hand corner of the goal, 1-1.

The second half was not to exciting as both sides struggled to really find decent goal scoring chances and just as both sides looked as if they would settle for a point substitute Manqoba Nqwenya had other ideas.

Nine minutes from time, Ngwenay pounced on a loose ball inside the United box after a goal mouth scramble and fired the ball home to give his side the lead, 2-1, and their first victory in ten matches.
